Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day is celebrated in a number of countries and stems from being originally invented (over 1,000 years ago) to use up rich and fattening foods before Lent began on Ash Wednesday.
As an individual who will be piling my plate with pancakes this evening, I thought I would treat you to a few fun facts surrounding Shrove Tuesday.
- Brits use around 52 million eggs on Pancake Day – that’s 22 million more than an average day
- The largest pancake on record measured 15 metres long and weighed 3 tonnes
- A person will eat 7,000 eggs in their lifetime
- The most flips ever done with a pancake equalled 349 in two minutes
- On average we consume two pancakes per person on pancake day
- The Guinness World Record for the most pancakes served in eight hours is 34,818
Pancake Day not only means a delicious treat for tea, but it also gives the whole family the chance to have some fun together!
Why not host a ‘pancake off’ – who is going to come up with the best toppings for their pancakes? Or who can flip theirs in the pan the most times?
You could also include cutters to make fun patterns for children, along with sauces so they can write messages on them!
Tasty Tips
On the other hand, some of you might take your pancake making a little more seriously – if this is the case, why not read this article by The Guardian, giving you some top tips on which beer makes the best batter for pancakes!
